Genghis the Painter - Hardware Stores

Masse's is where I buy most of my paint (California) and supplies. The Masse family has owned and operated the store for over a hundred years, and they've gotten good at it. The people behind the counter are intelligent and helpful. (Try to find that at Home Depot!) And they've got ancient, unfinished maple floors, so the place is irresistible to me. Masse Hardware

Dickson Brothers also employs salt-of-the-earth types, and it's the only place in Cambridge to get Pratt & Lambert paint. They also carry California. However, since it's in the middle of Harvard Square and parking is tough, it's not an easy place to pick up a case of paint. I don't get there as often as I'd like. Their trade is oriented more toward the foot-traffic of homemaking than the car and truck-traffic of home-maintenance. Dickson Bros. Hardware

Mills has really good prices on roller sleeves and some other sundries. Mike, who is usually behind the counter, umpires softball games in the evening, so one can get supplies and whine about the Red Sox at the same time.

Johnson Paint is the toniest paint store around, and it's on the toniest boutique street in New England. You have to park in Rhode Island. Sometimes, it's just necessary; they're experts, and they've got everything. Johnson Paint

And, finally, there's H.D.Chasen, a hard hardware store. I have never seen a customer there who didn't look like he ate nails for breakfast. Most of their goods would be dangerous in most hands. However, if you really need a buffing wheel and some jewelers' rouge to make brass look like gold... H.D.Chasen
